Good afternoon I am going to tell you all about Douglass creek first I will tell you about are last trip. Well first we got in the bus and headed to Douglas creek when we got to Douglass creek we headed to are site we got every thing ready for the photo point and then we took the picture and we had to do macro invertebrates and we had to go in the water.

Site Survey 2010

The site we are in is site #7. There are 8 sites. First we will talk about our Riparian zone that is by the left bank looking down stream. We will tell you about the width of the left and right looking down stream was 0ft.-50ft. There are 4 types of trees we saw. We didn’t see any conifers or deciduous tree’s there either. We saw some shrubs, and we saw mostly grasses and herbs. The over head canopy covered 0%-25% of our site. The shade on the creek was made by a dead tree.

Next is the channel of our site. The channel we have looks like U. There are three kinds of cross-sections a u, a flat and a v. (cool hu!)Then there’s the longitudinal pattern ours was braded there are three straight, braded and mending. Our gradient was monderent. There are three gradients low, moderent and steep.

Another thing we surveyed is the stream banks. The vegetation cover on our stream reach bank was abundant. Most of the banks were covered with tall grass that reached over our waists.

Then there’s the artificial bank protection. Our protection was 0-25%. Bank stability is another part of our site survey. Our bank was intact we had erosion in some areas and our bank didn’t collapse at all.

Also we surveyed the reach habitat. The numbers of riffles where 4. Riffles put oxygen in the stream. The number of pools was three. The percent of riffles in our stream reach was 30 percent. The percent of pools was 70%. In our woody debris spars organic debris none. Then there are artificial structures. In stream reach garbage and liter. Along the stream reach there where roads. Last is land uses there are none.

This picture shows that a deer has visited site seven. The deer left behind some scat (POOP!). We think that the deer had just came by to take a drink of water from the creek and a bite of grass out of the riparian zone.

We are going to tell you 6 things about site seven.
Are site is located by the eroded road and there is a steep hill that has a white stripe witch we think, means it is very, very, very, very old. We hope that you will enjoy reading are description of are site.

First we will inform you about the riparian zone looking down stream. The riparian zone is the green area around the creek. On the right bank is 50-100ft. The left bank looking down stream is 0-50ft. At are site we had a lot of vegetation. We had 0% conifer, Deciduous sparse, Shrubs where abundant, last the grass was defiantly abundant.
Second, are the shape in cross section is a U. Are site is gradient which means steep. A large section of are site creeks longitudinal pattern is meandering, but at the creek it is braided. A longitudinal could be straight, meandering, or braided. Braided means that there is a small piece of land in the water and that the water goes around it. Meandering means that a part of a creek is waving back and forth and does not go around any land. Straight means that it is just going straight with no land in the water and it is not waving.

Third I am going to tell you what kind of artificial structures that are site has. The only artificial structures that are site has is a road. The road is located on the side the creeks bank looking down stream. Looking up stream and there is the road.

The fourth thing we will tell you about is reach habitat .The reach habitat is the numbers of pools and riffles. The number of pools is 1. The percent the pool covers is 10% .The number of riffles is 1. The percent is 10%.Organic debris is dead plants and dead grass .Woody debris is dead wood in the water. You’re site has moderate

Fifth I will you about stream bank . The stream bank is the side of the bank that holds the dirt in place. Site seven is at a stream called Douglas creek. The town ship is 23 the range is 23. We are studying 100ft reach. You will learn 6 things about are site.
Last the land use adjacent to reach. Are site doesn’t get visited only we visit it I think that because nobody can get down there. We have a steep hill and no garbage. Road the road is on the left side of are site and it is falling in.

Based on the data we have collected our group will explain how the plants, and animals of Douglas creek survive together?
In our stream reach, we have some riffles. The riffles make oxygen for the fish so they can breath underwater. Next the grass and vegetation is important because it will help the animals so they can live with out dieing. Deer and rabbits can eat the grass for food. Plants also make food for the bears like berries. Trees shade the creek. This is important because this allows for the water to stay at the right temperature for the fish and other creatures. The soil found at the creek helps the trees grow. Soil is made of organic material like dead grass and leaves. It seems like the human activity is not bothering this area in site 7. Site 7 has a lot of living things around the water, and in the water. That is what site 7 has around.

This is Taylor, Shannda Mckalin and Katja working toghter to find macro invertebrates that live in organic materail that is on rocks in the water. How to get them me Taylor and Mckalin had to get in the deep water and scrub the rocks in the water and try not to lift the rock from the water. Shannda and Katija had to get two meters sticks and a net and put the meter stick in the net because that captures the bugs in the net. Once we had to get the bugs out we used spoons and put them in ice trays. Then we observed them and identified the bugs.

Site seven has lots of weeds and grass. We have two small waterfalls running by each other.The first time we went to Douglas Creek we saw a deid crawdad. We also found some deer scat but we didn't take it because it was fresh. We never got to see any animals.

Location Description There was very tall grass it was tall. There was one big tree that had no leaves. Last there was a hole bunch of tics.

Site seven is at the stream called Douglas Creek. The town ship is 23 the range is 23. The reach we are studying is one hundred feet long. Once you read our report you will learn 11 things about site #7.

First we will inform you about the riparian zone. Site seven’s left bank looking down stream is 0-50 ft. wide and it is the same width on the right side of the bank looking down stream. The vegetation covering our site was deciduous, shrubs and trees. Also grass and herbs covered about 50% of our site. We did not have any conifer trees. The over head canopy is 0-25%.

Next the channel will be described for you. The channel is a shape of a flat bottom.
The sites longitudinal pattern is not braided or straight it is meandering.

On our stream bank our vegetation cover was abundant. There was no artificial bank protection. Our bank has three things. First the bank was intact. Second the bank had erosion in some areas. Last the was bank collapsed in so some areas. Finally our reach habitat had a total of five riffles. The total of pools at our site is five. The total of riffle is 50 percent.

In are stream reach there is no dams, no culverts, no pips, no diversion, no storm drains, no Weirs and no litter.

In conclusion you now know a lot of thing about Douglas creek and what you find there.
